Fair warning: This is NSFW (depending on where you work – not safe for work.)

She says: Omigosh! You gotta love these people. Hilarious and brilliant at the same time. Did these guys spend too much time on the farm you might ask?
Possibly, but still… hilarious! Am I going to try this wine? YES!

As their website says: This wine is from the guys who brought your daughter home late. HAHAHA!!!
You gotta love it!

Which wine goes with BROCCOLI? – or “It’s National Women’s Health and Fitness Day!”

She said:  I can’t believe I used to be a vegetarian and used to eat raw broccoli all the time.  Now, I hate broccoli.  In fact, I don’t know anyone who likes broccoli.  But today is National Women’s Health and Fitness day, so what better way to celebrate than figure out which wine goes with broccoli and find a good broccoli recipe?

I have finally found a broccoli recipe that doesn’t make me barf. From the lovely Barefoot Contessa with a few variations by me because the only thing I hate more than broccoli is cooking.

Barefoot Contessa Broccoli Recipe for National Women's Health & Fitness Day

I mean – is broccoli ugly, or what? But it tastes great. This is my rendition of Barefoot Contessa Broccoli. You can’t see it, but I really did do my first “lemon zest” and there are pine nuts in there and there are garlic slices and basil slices, I swear.

Barefoot Contessa’s Awesome Broccoli

Heat the oven to 325 degrees
What you’ll need:
1  head of broccoli
2 tablespoons of olive oil
salt and pepper to taste
6 cloves of garlic
3 tablespoons of pine nuts
6 leaves of basil
zest of 1 lemon rind (or orange or lime if you don’t like lemon)
a mixing bowl
a cookie sheet
Rinse the broccoli
Cut into pieces
Be sure to dry the pieces thoroughly
Put them in a bowl
Drizzle the olive oil over the flowery portion of the heads.
mix w/your hands or a spatula.
Let sit for 20 mins so the broccoli absorbs the oil  (that’s my note, not the Contessa’s)
Sprinkle salt and black pepper to taste ( I like a lot of salt & pepper)
Peel the garlic
Slice the garlic into long slices
Mix all that together, toss it around a few times
Put it on a cookie sheet (with sides to prevent the broccoli from escaping)
Separate all the broccoli pieces so they aren’t on top of each other
Bake in your 325 degree oven.
Check on it in 20 mins.
What you want is for the flowers of the broccoli to begin to brown. When they begin to brown, you’re almost done.
20 minutes later
Roast the pine nuts slightly (in a pan on a burner apparently)
Toss them in w/the broccoli
Slice the basil into thin strips – toss that in there, too.
Put it all in a serving dish (because you’re not tacky)
Zest 1 lemon, (or orange or lime if you don’t like lemon)
Sprinkle the zest from the lemon, lime or orange on top
Eat like a monster.  It’s sooooo good.
Then take a nap (that was exhausting)
Options:  you can add additional olive oil if you want. (doesn’t need it in my opinion)
Grated parmesan cheese – you can sprinkle on some parmesan cheese (doesn’t need it)
Seriously good broccoli.
He said:  Now you have two things you know how to make! You’re a star chef!
She says:   And now… what about the wine?
WELLL…
2005  Kenneth Crawford Grenache was great with it!  Too strong you say?  Well, broccoli is a strong vegetable, so it met it’s match with this red wine.  (I’m sure more current years of Kenneth Crawford Grenache will be great, too — 2005 was just sitting nearby. Kenneth Crawford wines are an easy “win” for everyone.)
2011 Terre di Terrosa Pino Grigio from Italy also tasted great.
For purists, you’ll probably be happier tasting it with the white wine.
Did you choose a different wine? Tell me about it!
He says:  A nice Sauvignon Blanc is also good. Ferrari-Carano Fume Blanc is widely available and always a dependable, fruity, delicious sauvignon blanc.  Fume blanc is a name coined by Robert Mondavi that usually is used to denote a sauvignon blanc that has been aged in oak for a little bit and has a rounder flavor.  If you find many sauvignon blancs too grassy or vegetal (like broccoli!), then try this fume blanc as it’s closer in flavor to a chardonnay but still with some acid to make it very food friendly.  It pairs well with the lemon in the dish.

Halloween Gifts – Try the Vampire Vineyards Wine Collection and stop in at The Vampire Lounge and Tasting Room

Halloween gifts – what’s a girl to do?

Vampire Lounge, Beverly Hills, CA

SHE says:
You can show up with some standard tiny candies, or be the Halloween gift bearer who brings something healthy ~ or be a Halloween gift giving star.  I suggest you be the Halloween gift giving star this year.

Here’s my secret to a great Halloween gift:  Vampire Vineyards wines, Vampyre Vodka, Vampire Coffee and Vampire Chocolate ~ WHAT?!?

My love affair with Vampire Vineyards continues.  I loved it more when the wine was actually from Transylvania, but my therapist says I’m almost over that shock.

HE says: Yes, the Vampire Vineyards marketing machine has expanded the brand to include all things decadent and SHE’s so happy, SHE might just bite you.

SHE says: Yes, they’ve expanded their brand AND get this ~ Vampire Vineyards has opened VAMPIRE LOUNGE in Beverly Hills. Seriously?  Seriously.  I am finally satisfied.  Their brand just might be complete.

HE says: Do they “complete” you?

SHE says: La, la, la… I can’t hear you… la, la, la…

SHE also says:  Let’s start with Vampire Lounge.  It’s a store, it’s a bar, it’s a real lounge with gorgeous sofas, library books and even Vampire Tarot cards. Downstairs small tables, tall seats at the very beautiful, perfect sized bar.  Upstairs is comfy (the entryway to

Chandelier at the Vampire Lounge in Beverly Hills

upstairs reads Vampire Lyre) and what can I say… I love it when people understand what a lounge really is.

Vampire Lounge is cozy, and gorgeous which is how I like my lounges.   Upsatirs two sofas (one purple, one black), library books, Vampire Tarot cards, mirrors, small lamps, some chachtkas, the ever gorgeous  Haute Living magazine (vampires being about 500 years old live very Haute on the hog  ~ I can confirm this from personal experience) and I won’t tell you everything because you want to be a little surprised when you visit the Vampire Lounge.

With the right companions, it’s a blast.  HE could so totally help them with their food menu as it still needs some work, but vampires are so busy drinking blood that they just don’t eat very much.  (also confirmed from personal experience.)

Halloween gift options at Vampire Lounge? OMIGOSH! So many!

1) The Vampire Vineyards wines – reds and whites

2) The Trueblood wine label (not related to the television show)

3) The Chateau du Vampire label

4) Dracula wine label

5) J’ Taime sparkling wine

6) Vampyre Vodka (red and white)

7) Vampire coffee (so THATS how they stay up all night)

8) Vampire chocolate bars (good, but my guess is even better in the future)

9) Some beers called Witches Brew…

10) Vampire wine glasses

Lots of dark fun.  The only thing missing? A selection of vampire fangs.

Vampire Wine

Do be aware that the bottled wine prices at the lounge might seem a little steep, but they have discounts, so just ask for the details.   If you’re a last minute shopper, just stoppping in- it’s worth it. Consider joining their Vampire Wine Club and you’ll get some really nice perks.

If you’re doing your Halloween gift shopping a bit in advance, you can also find Vampire Wines at TotalWine.com stores near you for $8.99 a bottle.  A quick phone call revealed  the store where I discovered Vampire Wines ~ Robert Burns Wines on Robertson Blvd. in Beverly Hills continues to carry the wines and they will be in stock very soon! Shahe did not yet know their price.

“Cheeses for Jesus” or “Which cheeses made the cut for our French Christmas Breakfast?”

SHE says:  Let’s have a French Christmas breakfast with lots of new French cheeses.

Four French Cheeses for Jesus

HE says:  A sort of “Cheeses for Jesus!”

And so it was.  If you ‘d like to see the pictures and read about our full Cheeses for Jesus morning, stop on over at this blog post and enjoy! Easy French Holiday Breakfast! and if you like,    For a quick link to Sparkling Wines we served with these cheeses CLICK HERE!

Four fabulous French fromage we had never tried before.  Here are our notes.  We hope you enjoy!

Carre Du Poitou – The one sort of melting on the left of the photo – just under the salami.   HE says:  Very soft and creamy goat cheese.  Somewhat like the texture and taste of a brie or epoisse but not as rich.  SHE says:  You didn’t tell me we were making a stop in heaven!

Fromage d’ Affinois – Cheese on the right bottom of the photo.  Confused with brie, but very different process. HE says:  Stinky and creamy. Yellow color.  Made from cow’s milk. Stronger flavor. Pungent.  SHE says:  The only way to have cow’s milk is after it’s been made into something like this.

Abbeya de Bellac –  Upper right hand corner of the photo.  Traditionally made by Benedictine Monks in the Basque region.  HE says:  This is a hard cheese but still creamy.  Sheep’s cheese. Nutty.   SHE says:  Now you understand how the Catholic girls get crushes on the priests.

Navarre –   A firmer cheese that is very creamy made from a blend of cow and sheep milk.  The rind is packed with rosemary, pepper and additional herbs.  HE says:  Very good flavors.   SHE says:  I love it when you mix it all up and the herbs get caught in the cheese.  Completely different experience.

Where in the world did we find these cheeses?   The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills.   Make a visit to their website and get your cheese on. :-)

We hope you’ll create your own French holiday breakfast because it’s so much fun and leaves everyone happier!

Which Wines Would Barry Serve? Seven great choices for Thanksgiving dinner.

And now… for the Thanksgiving wines...

If you want a white wine, almost any Chardonnay you like will do.  HE’s personal recommendations for easy to find, easy to buy Chardonnays are below.  Print this list out, take it to your nearby wine store and if they don’t have one of these exact wines, ask them for something similar.  You’ll be a star dinner guest.

Chateau St. Michelle 2008 from Washington is (usually under $10) is a terrific Chardonnay. Socred a “90″ by those people who score wines.

2007 Qupe Reserve Bien Nacido – from Santa Barbara area, we’ve had Qupe many times and it is consistently good.   (around $20)

Rombauer *(approx $32/bottle)

Or a chardonnay from Longoria Wines for approx $35.

If you like red wines, Barrysentials recommends a Pinot Noir.  Again, most of these are easily and readily available at a local wine store, a World Market store, Whole Foods or larger wine cave.  Just print the list and take it with you and ask the sales person for assistance.  Here are a few to try:

Melville Estate Pinot Noir (around $25)  is reliable in almost any vintage  and not too big to overpower your Thanksgiving feast.

2009 Redtree Pinot Noir (you might be able to find as low as $6/bottle)  hard to believe it can sell for $6 but by now you’ve heard the market is a little flooded with wine.  Don’t be afraid of that screw cap…it’s all the rage now creating a much stronger seal while the wine ages.

2008 Oyster Bay Pinot Noir from New Zealand ($15/bottle)

Still a little nervous?  No worries, here’s more Thanksgiving wine information from the LA Times.

Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow you’ll have leftovers!

FEATURED WINE:
2007  Santa Rita Carmenere -   This Chilean red wine goes beautifully with very red Ahi-Tuna that is seared for a few minutes on both sides.   We cover our ahi with black tea and hot Chinese Five Spice before searing.   The red wine does a great job of cooling the heat and matching the Ahi Tuna.

Wine, Women and Song (a little off topic)

SHE SAYS: We had dinner last night with a friend who is living in Los Angeles for just a few months.  She mentioned she had a neighbor in her building who kept inviting her over to see his wine collection.  Riiiiight.
So ladies and gentlemen, there it is.  “Would you like to come over and see my etchings?” has been replaced with
“Would you like to come over and see my wine collection?”

Just one of the ways that HE got SHE. It works. ;-)
